Journalism personal statement

The media's the most powerful entity on earth. An interesting quote from Malcolm X, who also claimed, Without education, you're not going anywhere in this world. I wish to combine these two passions and follow my ambition to become a journalist by continuing my studies into Higher Education. It is well known that power attracts and I, like many others, have become enchanted by the power of the written and spoken word. This fascination has created a deep interest in writing, and Journalism provides the perfect outlet to develop my skills.

Ive heard enough about the media industry to realise that experience is everything, and as Sixth Form Reporter on the College committee, I gain regular experience of journalistic writing and meeting deadlines. I have written for the official college Network, which is sent home to parents, and the Student Newspaper.

When selecting my A Level subjects, I seemed drawn to essay based courses. I enjoy writing and the courses undoubtedly helped my writing skills. However, I was required to make the opening of a film in Media, which was an experience to say the least! It increased my interest in Broadcast Journalism. Until that moment, I only had eyes for Print. Creative writing has always been one of my favourite aspects of English, and the coursework gave me the chance to write in whichever style I chose, one piece was a newspaper feature on Chelsea Football Club. I have always been interested in Sports Writing and Im considering specialising in it at a later date. I have chosen to continue four of my five AS Levels onto A2, even though it was not necessary. I have always found Psychology quite challenging as it involves deep levels of critical analysis, so I decided to carry on as I find it extremely intriguing. The different theories as to why humans do the things they do, attract me because I am interested in how people act, though one could hardly call me an anthropologist! My main priorities are English, Media and Sociology as I feel they will aid me most in my ambition, although I still find Psychology a fascinating subject.

I have often said that nothing is impossible, yet asking me to name my favourite book is asking too much. Some much-loved literature includes The Hobbit, Gone With The Wind, and Jane Eyre. In my opinion a good novel should evoke a variety of emotions from beginning to end. Music may not be my first love, but it is definitely one of my passions; I have high passes in grade 3 flute, singing, and grade 5 piano. Like my literary tastes, my choice of music is eclectic; I like anything from hip-hop to classical, soul to rock, and past to present. I also love Black history, musicals, and icons of film and music, such as Audrey Hepburn, John Lennon, and Sinatra. Lennon once said, We all want to change the world, I empathise with this view and seek to achieve it using my chosen profession and the power of the media.

Journalism personal statement

I have for as long as I can remember had a fascination with people and different cultures which has manifested itself in the areas of work I have chosen during my time in travel, a national advertising company and at a filming company. The aspects of these jobs I have enjoyed the most are the research and analysis element as there is always something new to learn and conveying that information to a varied audience both written and verbally, be it researching a holiday destination for a client with special needs in travel, designing a business’s advertising campaign or researching and developing a holiday destination film. The tsunami and September 11th broadcast, press coverage and the issues raised highlight just some of the reasons why I am pursuing a career in journalism. The world through tragedy was united in a common goal from what we witnessed from broadcasts and press coverage and the issues raised Journalism links our worlds together from local to international. It is a platform from which we can share our experiences, views, news and culture. I aim to become a skilled journalist that can generate an interest within my readers in order that they can make informed choices and build their own views in the world in which they live. I believe the freedom of the press is fundamental we as a society enjoy.
.
Since leaving school I have undertaken a variety of jobs largely in travel. On a day to day basis as a travel agent my main role was researching holidays for individual clients. I particularly enjoyed booking families anniversary’s and weddings as they usually wanted something a little bit special or different and it really gave me something to get my teeth into. My success in travel can largely be attributed to the excellent communication and analytical skills I have developed both written and verbally listening and detailed notes I took from clients. Researching areas, costs and cultures, tailoring a holiday to their needs and conveying my findings to them in a jargon-free way.
My role within filming furthered my interest in journalism. As a project manager my main duties were to research accommodation to appear in a tourist destination DVD of Norfolk and on our website. Working within a multi skilled team and using my knowledge and experience in travel we compiled a tourist information film of over 100 different business’s . From initial contact with the client to filming schedule and content and I was responsible for who and what was included in the DVD and website. The job satisfaction I gained in this role was in knowing what we featured not only gave the viewer clear understanding of what they could expect and enjoy whilst visiting the area but also the positive affect it had on promoting smaller lesser know attractions.
I have chosen this university course in particular because firstly it is close to home and convenient and also the course is offered to people like myself who would like to pursue a career in journalism .As a mature student I have acquired and will utilise in my studies aspects of self motivation, excellent time management and conscientious approach to my work . Relevant work skills I will use include those already mentioned and also the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines, analysis and collation of complex data and can manage a wide variety of software

Public Relations Personal Statement

The media is central to the experience of modern life. It builds and connects cultures and communities locally, nationally and globally and shapes our views of the world, our identities and our fantasies. It makes up global industries, providing employment and shaping cultural, political and economic realities. However, public relations is about reputation, it is the discipline which looks after reputation, with the aim of obtaining understanding, support and influencing opinion and behaviour.I have read that the Institute of Public Relations define it as the planned and sustained effort to establish and maintain goodwill and mutual understanding between an organisation and its publics. I see this as method of assisting the marketing of an organisation
Looking up the word publics I learn that publics are audiences that are important to the organisation. They include customers - existing and future; employees,; investors; media; government; suppliers and the general public;

I have also read a lot of books about public relations such as âââ

Media Studies personal statement

Before my fascination for the media world developed I like everyone else was subconsciously a part of it. The news that was on TV, the magazines that I read and the commercials that urged me to buy the products I bought. The media and the world it creates around us are always there whether we are aware of it or not. Then becoming a media student was like learning the tricks of the trade, being let in on all these secrets and I loved knowing why the media did things and how they accomplished them. By studying media at a degree level I feel I will be able to enhance my interest for the subject as well as expand my current knowledge and be able to gain new skills that will enable me to both advance and flourish within this area as well as taking great pleasure in doing so.

I have been involved in different aspects of media (especially advertising) for a few years. I have studied Media at both GCSE and A Level. When on these courses I worked on producing a variety of media projects including creating and airing a community radio station, producing and starring in an episode of a soap opera and comic book production. Whilst at 6th form I have worked on publicity shots for a variety of projects such as prospectuses and open evenings. I am also the design editor of the school paper a feat of which I am very proud. As well as participating in media related tasks on an educational level, I have taken my interest out side of just academic projects. For the government run scheme Connexions I worked on a PR campaign which involved me participating in many media based tasks such as designing a print based advert which was distributed throughout all the senior schools and colleges in the Birmingham and Solihull areas. I also created a website for a local youth club called the Den a council run scheme.

I'd like to think I have a positive impact on my school and 6th form where I am head girl. I was previously a prefect and ran a friendship group for new year sevens and eights. I try my hardest to change things for the better and enjoy working with pupils of all ages in the school in activities such as the school council and mentoring. In the summer of 2005 I undertook work experience with a drama group which taught young children morals through plays and I greatly gained from the experience. Along with media I am undertaking English and Photography A levels as I feel that both of them can greatly aid me in a media orientated direction.

My outside interests span a wide variety. I love to read some of my favourite authors being ''Dan Brown'' and ''JKRowling''. I also like to write and have recently had one of my poems published in a young author's collection. Photography and graphic designs are huge personal passions of mine; they give me the ability to express my self in a creative and positive way. Since July 2005 I have been part of the Birmingham and Solihull Youth Board and worked up to being a senior member. I enjoy spending time with my friends participating in social activities such as paintballing, laser quest, the cinema and bowling. On Saturdays I also have a part time Job at a library where I have to be organised as well as computer literate and complete tasks independently or part of a team. Last summer I spent 3 weeks travelling Europe and went to places such as 'Auschwitchz in Krakow and the 'Reichstag' in Berlin. The experience was amazing and allowed me insight to other countries cultures and lifestyles.

Media is a huge part of both my academic and personal life and I truly feel that placement on this course would help me in my future career ambitions in the media world. Living so far away from home whilst on the course would also help me gain independence and life skills.

Communications, Media & Culture personal statement

I am hoping to read for a communications, media and culture degree. I find it remarkable, inspiring and a little bit frightening how the media exercise control over our lives, whilst offering rich cultural rewards. I am fascinated by the action and effects of human communications of all kinds and am keen to extend the insight I have gained so far.
My interest in the subject began through my GCSE Media Studies and my knowledge of the subject area has expanded at A-level where I am acquiring analytical skills, helping me unpack and contextualise a wider variety of media forms. My other A-levels are English Language, Sociology, Critical Thinking and Philosophy &Ethics, and these are giving me a broad overview of life and human communications and culture. An example of how these subjects support each other would be studying the marxist concept of hegemony and applying it to religion, media ownership, the high culture/low culture debate in sociology and even the bourgeois emphasis on Standard English.
I've slowly been gaining practical experience alongside my academic learning. Two years ago, I was lucky enough to get work experience with a television crew on location as a runner. I learnt the value of working as a member of the team in a stressful environment and I gained an understanding of the processes of TV production. I have also been involved in several other media projects, some as coursework and others undertaken independently. Coursework projects have included a magazine for young male teenagers; designing a product and advertising campaign; and producing, directing and presenting a documentary for sixth formers and their parents on the EMA system. As extra-curricular activities, I designed a poster and Internet campaign for one of the school plays and in the absence of any existing school publication, I launched a bimonthly newsletter, aimed at Angley's students. These projects have provided great learning experiences, enabling me to develop print software skills in a creative way.
Other school activities have included, the lead male role in 'South Pacific' and significant roles in 'Oliver' and 'West Side Story' as well as assisting the Performing Arts A-level group perform their comedy show. By playing roles on stage, my confidence has increased and I have learnt to appreciate and learn from the talents of others. I am also a school prefect, which I find satisfying and a great privilege.
In my leisure time I enjoy making films - mostly parodies of various genres. I then edit the films using a programme called Magix Movie Edit Pro. I have also edited on Final Cut Express, which has made an interesting comparison. My next project is to learn Final Cut Pro, and to develop a more effects-driven style. I also like to read, for example, I was inspired by Naomi Klein's book No Logo on the effects of globalization, the commoditisation of our culture and public spaces and how powerful brands have become. I am currently reading Graeme Burton's Media & Society to gain some additional perspective on my A2 media and to prepare myself for my degree.
So far I have enjoyed myself in my studies and hopefully have developed some of the skills and qualities for success in degree-level communications, media and culture studies.

Screenwriting personal statement

I believe that my greatest strength is my vivid imagination. From a young age I have been fortunate enough to be able to create new worlds and characters for stories. .I have been inspired by Jasper Fforde’s style of wit and wordplay in the “Literary Detective and “Nursery Crime series of books. I have also been inspired by Russell T. Davis’s combination of drama and comedy that made the recent resurrection of Doctor Who such a success.

This course appeals to me because I enjoy writing and using my imagination. I think that this course specifically appeals to me because it covers different genres of film and television writing, so I can learn about genres that I haven’t had a chance to explore before. I understand that working I the media is a very competitive industry, however I am determined to succeed. I think that this course will help me to succeed and offer me opportunities to further my understanding of the way that language in this media text can influence and inspire people.

I have really enjoyed college so far. Although I was concerned at the beginning about choosing mostly subjects with a creative core, I think that it was correct to follow my passion for these subjects as they have enhanced my imagination and given me confidence in my ideas and my ability to share them with other people. Subjects such as English Language have taught me the importance of choosing the right vocabulary in a piece of text and that the correct wording of a text can give it more meaning and powerful imagery.

Extra-curricular activities such as being part of the leavers ball committee has helped me to develop skills such as team-work, people skills and the ability to work to a deadline.

Currently I am a 4th Kyu Karate which I gained through dedication to the club, hard-work and determination. I have developed my confidence, respect, dedication, determination and leadership skills. I have also been able to develop these skills in my job. It has pushed me outside my comfort zone by making me work closely with new people and people that I would not work with if given the choice. Balancing my job, my Karate and my A-level work has been a challenge, however I have managed it by becoming a more organised person.

The achievement that I am most proud of is having a poem published when I was 13. This gave me a sense of achievement and pride because it gave me confidence in my ability to be able to write something that other people want to read.

As soon as I began my Media Studies and English Language courses I knew that I wanted to write for some medium of media. The feedback I received from my English Language coursework script reinforced my desire to become a scriptwriter. I enjoyed the time I spent writing and editing the script. I want to study scriptwriting at a university standard because I want to further my understanding of the power that language has in this area of the media.

Illustration and art personal statement

I have always enjoyed Art from an early age. My earliest memory of this is doodling on sheets of computer paper and cutting up old Christmas cards to make new images. I can remember spending most of my childhood just drawing and being inspired to make and design anything and everything! This love of Art has stayed with me and developed and grown and, now, I cannot imagine wanting to do anything else.

I have always wanted to work within the Art and Design industry because it has always felt like the right direction for me to take. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to go to an Art school and I now feel really lucky to have the opportunity to do so: I am feeling very excited about my future!
I enjoy being creative and I view Art as a natural way for me to express myself. I particularly enjoy drawing and how this allows me to create images in a way that I see them. I enjoy working in a figurative and detailed way and I aim to make my work expressive and visually interesting through tone and mark-making. I feel, from my progression from G.C.S.E through A Levels to A.V.C.E, I am beginning to develop my own style and way of working. I particularly enjoy portraiture work and using animals as subject matter.

Whilst at Crosshall High School, I achieved seven G.C.S.Es, gaining a grade A in Art. I have since gone on to achieve three A levels and two A/s Levels at Runshaw college. I have completed an A Level in Fine Art, whilst there, and I enjoyed this extremely. I found this course very challenging but rewarding as I had grown in my understanding of the discipline and I gained a grade B. I am currently completing an A.V.C.E Art and Design course. This two-year course has been very beneficial to me as I feel I have developed my skills within Art and have gained an understanding of the various disciplines within Art and Design. This course has led me to my decision to specialise within Illustration. I enjoy creating images in response to a piece of writing or a particular theme. I like the creative freedom this allows and the vast potential for work.

My interests include reading and some of my favourite novels include To Kill A Mockingbird and Mary Shelleys Frankenstein. My favourite novel has to be Animal Farm because it is so well written and has great impact. I have recently carried out an illustration brief based on this novel and this was very exciting for me and, I feel, a turning point in my work.

I enjoy visiting Art Galleries and exhibitions. I am particularly interested in figurative portraiture and Illustration-based exhibitions. I have recently visited an exhibition about drawing styles at my local Art Gallery. I found this very interesting as there were varied styles and approaches to drawing( I especially liked Posy Simmons use of storyboards). A few months ago I visited an exhibition for childrens illustrator Shirley Hughes at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. This had a great impact on me and was one of the factors that has led to me pursuing a career in Illustration. I love the way she combines her use of image against text and the way she uses media expressively. At this stage, I am interested in childrens book illustration as there are so many quality, contemporary illustrations at the moment that I find inspiring. I see illustrations for childrens books as something worthwhile and or importance. They can capture a childs imagination and inspire and motivate them to learn to read.

I have worked for the past three years at a bakery as a part-time counter assistant. This involves such duties as dealing with customers, dealing with money and organising displays. I have really enjoyed this job as we are a fairly busy shop and so I meet a lot of different people and I find this very rewarding. Prior to this, I have worked voluntarily at a local vets practise. I found this very interesting because I like animals and this was a chance for me to learn more about them. I have also been involved in an activity group for disabled children . This experience was invaluable to me as I met such interesting and amazing people. The group activities included Art and Crafts and this taught me how Art can be therapeutic and< basically, just a worthwhile form of expression.

Photography personal statement

It is estimated that within the two hundred independent countries of the world there are 6800
different spoken languages, creating a huge expanse of language barriers, hand signals and
lost translations. However, within this mass of worldwide confusion, pictures and photography
can still be understood universally. Maybe it's a cliched point to prove, but personally I
think this underlines the concept that a picture can (with no specified language) speak a
thousand words to a thousand different people. I find this idea of global understanding deeply
fascinating and it is one reason among many which has propelled me towards the study and
creation of photography and the visual arts.

From a young age I have had an interest in pictures and drawing, which developed, as I got
older into an interest in textiles and a love of fashion. From this I decided to do an
introductory course at The London College of Fashion, and it was there that my idea to pursue
a career in photography and art direction first occurred. I found that although I was
interested in the logistics and business side of the fashion industry it was the compositions,
vibrant images and individuality of the advertising campaigns that truly inspired me. Studying
photography at A-level I have learnt the importance of individual style and personal reading;
seeing this put into practice in magazines and adverts led me to decide that with the aid of
higher education I wanted to go on and work with photography and advertising.

I have always had a flair for business, completing GCSE, AS and A level exams with a
high-grade average. I have learnt the importance of finances and budget restraints, which I
think is a very valuable lesson to learn. By studying English Language I have been able to
improve my writing skills and expand my knowledge of the way in which words can be used to
influence and explain. I have found both these subjects to have aided me with various
independent projects and have increased my understanding and ability to perform at a high
level in different areas. When I joined The Henley College I began working and learning with a
wide range of different people from different backgrounds, it was a large change from the
structured life of an all girls grammar school. However, I found moving to this environment
and a new way of education highly liberating, I was able to adjust very quickly, both socially
and to the educational practices. From this experience I learnt to be very open to new
opportunities and places, which has helped me with the projects and jobs I have done.

There are a large range of skills required when working in commercial photography- an example
of these being networking and perseverance. In order to gain a wider perspective into the
challenges of this as a career, as well as my subject coursework, I have done freelance work
on a number of occasions including photographing private events and parties. I found these
jobs to be more subjective as I had to work to a very specific brief with tight deadlines; the
results of such experiences I have found to be highly positive. I have learnt to compromise
with difficult clients and have had one of my photographs printed in BCFA member directory as
part of an advertising campaign. However, the biggest learning curve I experienced was when
observing work at a professional studio it was here I witnessed the patience and communication
skills needed to become a successful art director. I think by working with lens-based media at
a degree level I will be further towards gaining the attributes needed for this area of work.
From university I hope to go on to and work within the photography and creative advertising
industry. I know the skills necessary are both creatively and academically challenging, but
due to my ambition, social ability and general love of photography, I think it is definitely
something I could excel at, given the opportunity.

Cinema personal statement

A crowded and cluttered living room in a low-income townhouse. Stansfield bends over to see Leon lying in his own pool of imaginary blood that soaks into the already stained carpet. Leon uses his last ounce of strength to lift his clenched fist up to Stansfield. He opens to reveal a grenade pin, “For Mathilda…

At maybe thirteen years old, this might have very well been my directorial debut. I had just watched The Professional earlier that week and was telling my cousins about it. Describing the whole movie I arrived at the climax and decided that I really wanted for them to capture how the ending played out. So I set them up, fed them their lines and fetched a few props, or in our case whatever resembled a weapon. I tried my best to describe to my acting cousins how to play each part. Eventually, with all the noise we created, we gathered the family and held an impromptu performance.

I would like to say that this was the moment that I realized that I wanted to be apart of the film industry. That at that very second in time, everything simply clicked for me and I knew what I wanted to do the rest of my life. Of course this wasn’t the case. It was a gradual decision and agreement with myself that I found my senior year of high school. Like choosing which child you love more, I had to choose which dream to follow. That of music which I have been involved with for so long, or that of a newly found passion, cinema. I was weighing more towards the latter when I discovered a school that offered Cinema in my home state of Virginia, it felt like a godsend. Okay, maybe I was being overly dramatic, but nonetheless, I decided that I wanted to go to Virginia Commonwealth University for cinema.

Being accepted into VCU’s Photography/Film, I found out about the actual Cinema program a bit late to apply effectively. So I decided to dedicate my first year to prepare myself for cinema. I chose to major in Philosophy, which would be my intended secondary major should I be admitted, for my interest and curiosity in politics and everyday life. It would in addition help me creatively, crafting more intellectual and meaningful ways to portray messages in film. Also, working at Media and Reserves in James Branch Cabell Library has also helped me with its extensive collection of great movies. From Stalker to Talking to Strangers, I have taken the advice I’ve read from many filmmakers, “Watch a lot of movies.

I started out like many young filmmakers my generation, with an imagination, a few friends and a handicam. I would direct and shoot straight-to-You-Tube short films about anything and everything. Starting with the time traveling Sylvia Plath to music videos and of course, the ever-popular Star Wars fan films. Eventually, with the popularity of my shorts, my name got around school and I was offered a job as a video editor through a peer’s aunt and her wedding videography business. During this time, I had the opportunity to shoot with a more satisfying camera. I took advantage of the chance and started the production of a new project. Taking a different approach with his short film, I decided that now with a more professional camera, everything else should be taken up a notch as well. I worked harder during pre-production, developing the script and casting actors besides my close friends, specifically adults. With the story taking place in my school, I shot during class hours which upped the production value however also added a lot of factors to work against me. I had to fight against the clock as well some rushing teachers. In the end, we created a satisfying ten-minute short, Yanni.

After I showed just about everyone I knew the movie, I passed a flyer for a 5-Minute Video Competition displayed in my school. I was really excited for this until I read that the deadline was in a few days. I settled on submitting Yanni and cutting five minutes off of an already taut movie. A few days went by and I received information on an awards ceremony for all the competitors and that I was a finalist for the contest. The day of the ceremony, I walked into the dimly lit high school gymnasium and saw all of the other contestants. I spoke to some random Comcast superior, whose company sponsored the event, and after a bit of unintended schmoozing, had a seat in the back corner. I felt kind of alone being the only competitor to represent my high school. All of the other kids were laughing around the platters of food describing their favorite parts in each other’s submissions. The ceremony had begun and the projectors began to roll. I was beginning to get nervous to see how others would react to my film. However, hopefully without sounding too ostentatious, to my surprise the videos I saw lacked much merit. Most were home movie-esque images of themselves playing lacrosse laced with title shots and sound effects. Still, I slouched down in my seat when my video was next in line. I think it was well received by the audience after it was shown. There were three other finalists in my category. My mispronounced name was called to stage second receiving an honorable mention. I couldn’t help but have a big grin on my face when I walked up and shook the announcers hand. Afterwards, I mingled with some of the contestants and we congratulated one another. A few numbers were exchanged and some ideas for collaborating were brought up. I left that night feeling accomplished and compelled to continue my life as a filmmaker.
