Art & Design Personal Statement

The decision to study Art and Design as a university course is one which I have spent a lot of time thinking about. After conference with friends and tutors I have decided that this is the right decision for me as although I am performing better academically in another subject, it is in art and design that my real passion lies.
I believe that artists view the world differently. Rather than see a rusty nail, artists see silver, browns, oranges; golds. Swirling shapes and flat surfaces. It is my dream to study the world in this way, the visual attributes and aesthetic properties of objects, and examine how they could be expressed through different colours, shapes, lines and tones. I enjoy art courses extensively, the progression of a project and reflecting on it. I enjoy experimenting with light, colour, subject & mediums; mixing & matching the different aspects for individual results. I feel that I already possess the basic skills necessary to enter this course through my study of art and design at GCSE and A-Level. A lot of my interest in art and design also lies in other's interpretation of it. For this reason I am excited about the prospect of working through a course with others. To see how their interpretations and aspirations differ from my own; and to gain insight and inspiration from comparing works.
During my spare time over the last few years I have experimented with all aspects of art and design. From abstract painting to detailed pencil portraits, comics, sculpture and fashion design. I also briefly studied photography at AS level although unfortunately I had to drop this subject as the amount of work was interfering with my art course. In a university course I hope to refine my interest in art and design. Focusing on one or two aspects of the subject which I would then expand and develop on. I believe that a university course is the perfect place to work on this process. I am also excited about the prospect of learning new techniques. I am aware that the techniques touched upon during GCSE and A-Level were limited and look forward to exploring much more.
My main interests & hobbies lie in the Arts, Film and photography. I enjoy taking photographs and have had photos used by both Amnesty International and local newspapers. I visit the cinema at least once a week with friends; I especially like films of a documentary nature that give an insight into life of another culture. I find cinematography a particularily interesting aspect, how a freeze frame of a moment can be transformed into a single beautiful image. I also like to visit art galleries, particularly a local independent gallery called Catalyst Arts. I plan on submitting work to their next member's show in the near future. I like deciphering the message behind other people's work and looking for where they drew their inspiration from when I visit galleries. I usually go with friends as discussing each other's interpretation of the works afterwards is always very interesting. At the weekend I enjoy going to see bands, both signed & unsigned, and hearing music of many different genres. Any other spare time I have I spend on art & design work, and often submit art to things like charity auctions and competitions.
At the minute I am studying a 2 year A Level course at Belfast Metropolitan College. The shift from a grammar school to a college was initially difficult however I am glad that I have entered the college as I feel I am better prepared for a university course because of it. By studying at BMC I have learnt to mature academically and personally, to be self disciplined and to study for myself and by myself. I feel that I would easily adjust to a university course after studying here as both university and college courses rely on independent study and motivation which I feel I have exhibited since starting at BMC.
I took up the one year Art History A Level as I was bitterly disappointed in my results from AS Level Art. On reflection I think I was unaware of how much of a jump there was from GCSE to A Level & that there was a different structure & aim to the projects. This year I feel I am better adjusted & should perform well in the Art A Level, however I have taken up Art History as a security measure & as a source of inspiration for my projects. I feel I am progressing well in the subject & am enjoying the classes thoroughly, despite it being very condensed.
I also feel I have been prepared for this course in some ways by my work experience. In my first job, in an opticians, I often had to work on the aesthetics of the store, thinking carefully about what colours would best compliment each other and represent the aura of the store. I also worked on letterhead, logo and website design for the owners of this company. At the minute I am working as a contact centre advisor for Vodafone mobile (previously sky broadcasting). However I do not find this job fulfilling or beneficial to me in any way and am currently looking for a job in the arts. I also worked as a volunteer for Springfield Charitable Association, a local charity. This job especially taught me to work as part of a team as we relied on each other & depended on a team spirit to move projects along. Working for many years has also taught me management of time & money, which I think will be especially important whilst living independently and studying at university. I feel I have developed interpersonal skills and organizational skills through all this which will also benefit me and keep me focused in university.

Fashion Marketing & Management personal statement

Fashion is creative, seductive, always changing and a form of art, to others it is a religion. To me I use fashion to express myself and also to show my personality but also look glamorous. I mostly like the 1920s style because it's the time when women were more liberated to wear what they wanted, the freedom was expressed through simple but yet elegant designs that were beautifully co-ordinated that were accessorised with jewellery and represented the style and elegance of that time.

I am currently studying Fashion Marketing at the University of the Arts London. Studying in London is fantastic because of the different cultural mixture, and not to mention all the big art galleries that are in the heart of London. London is very fast paced which I like and the atmosphere is vibrant. I wanted to study Fashion marketing because I wanted to learn know more about the business side of Fashion. I am influenced by designers like Alexander McQueen because of his edgy style and Ralph Lauren more so because I used to work for the company, but I like his style because of the sophistication of some of his designs and the preppy look, the polo shirts and oxford shirts with riding boots.
Since starting the course with a business mind set, I have discovered that I am particularly drawn to marketing. I know that to excel in this subject will really take me where I want to be. I would like to have my own agency in the future, and possibly would look in the long term to a career in buying, as I have enjoyed learning about fashion trend predictions, and the influence of street style on the catwalk.

I was fortunate enough to work for Polo Ralph Lauren for nearly 3 years. I learnt an amazing amount about high end fashion retail business. I worked in sales, cashing up, training new staff, and visual merchandising. I have also worked for Ozwald Boateng as a summer temp this year, where I have learned more about couture lines since they make bespoke couture suits which are tailored and fitted. It was there that I learned to alter garments which I am sure will prove very useful to me.
By working in retail I have gained confidence which is important in our every day life, organisational skills, I am also a good team player as you always have to work as a team in sales, I have also been a team leader and also I have had to manage people which takes courage and commitment, I pay attention to the smallest detail because everything I do has to be perfect because I thrive in my work.

I also have a passion for designing; I have done a few clothes designs of my own and intend to do more. I find designing a good skill to have because you get to be creative and use your imagination to create something so extraordinary. I would like the opportunity to work in a fashion house, working as an in house assistant designer but as a second career prospect.
I have also gained a BTEC level 2 Diploma in IT and a Diploma level 2 in Digital Applications which is very helpful because in the fashion industry you have to be computer literate, and is an excellent skill to have. In my spare time I like to read books that challenge me to the best of my ability, I like to cook and entertain my friends as it is really important for me have a social life as well. I have a good personality, I am an easy going person and I am also very approachable. I go to the gym twice a week so as to keep fit.

I am a very self motivated person, who thrives to be the best in every subject area. So far I have received top grades for all my work and some good positive feedback from my peers and tutors. I have done extensive research to obtain good grades and I have the motivation and the passion to progress to do an Undergraduate degree.

Illustration/Visual Communication personal statement

Since starting my National Diploma in Graphic Design, I feel I have had the opportunity and freedom to experiment and explore my ideas fully. I have been able to expand and develop my visual communication skills and I am now able to create more effective and convincing imagery. I feel I am investing much more of myself in my work and am exploring ideas, media and techniques in addition to my main programme of study.

I have a broad range of influences that I am inspired by. Music has always been a passion for me since an early age, from almost every genre. I still listen to most of the same bands I listened to when I was 8 years old, and I find music to be a big source of inspiration for my illustration work. I am always listening to music and I regularly attend underground gigs, getting inspired by the raw sound of unsigned acts. I also love film; from Film Noir and Japanese Horror, to big blockbuster's and thrillers.

Reading is another major influence. My favourite genre is Transgressive Fiction, which includes the work of author Chuck Palahnuik. I love how he portrays the horror of â

Film Studies personal statement

Films are an insight into the human imagination, and offer the chance to inhabit worlds that would otherwise never exist. Whilst much the same is true of literature, the addition of a visual element only solidifies the immersive nature of storytelling. This is particularly abundant in the works of directors such as Stanley Kubrick and Terrence Malick, whose mastery of the photograph adds an added dimension of absorption to their pictures. In my early teens,
David Lynch introduced me to the world of surrealism. His nightmarish visions were the catalyst for my love of cinema, and the profound impact his work has had on my appreciation for film is staggering. The encouragement that artists such as Lynch give us to expand our imagination, and encompass otherwise impossible realities, I believe, is a vital aspect of contemporary filmmaking. Movies hold the power not only to entertain, but challenge us to broaden our understanding of the world, and the people within it. The lessons in morality,
which are so plentiful in films such as 'Half Nelson' by Ryan Fleck and 'There Will Be Blood' by Paul Thomas Anderson, are, in my opinion, some of the most poignant to ever come out of American cinema.

There is no doubt in my mind that a degree in this subject will be greatly significant for my future. I cannot think of a venture more deserving of my time than a study of film. This decision comes not just from a love for motion pictures, but also an appreciation for their importance within our lives. In my eyes, their potential is not to be underestimated. A career teaching the complexities of high quality cinema is one of my greatest ambitions. Combined
with a love for analysis and technical writing, it's clear to me that reading film is undoubtedly the correct course of action for me to take.

Aside from my affection for movies I am a keen runner and musician. The discipline of running infuses me with an energy that is fundamental to my other ventures. Listening to music is how I choose to relax. I am particularly fond of soul and jazz. As a music student, I was lucky enough to be chosen for a multitude of extracurricular projects within my course, the pinnacle of which was, for me, a tribute performance to Prince in which I played guitar.

Both my academic and personal interests lie in a study of film. My short term goals are to absorb as much knowledge as I can, opening as many career paths as possible, whilst at the same time maintaining an active interest and enthusiasm concerning cinema. I hope to one day be able to call film analysis a career, rather than just a passion.

Journalism personal statement

The media's writing style today is owed to the 'New Journalists' of the 1960's and 1970's who transformed the approach towards Journalism. I am making this application as I am fascinated by the vast scope which is covered by the subject and how in today's society the media plays a major role in every subject imaginable and affects everybody's life in some way. After completing this course I hope to enter into Print or Broadcast Journalism and eventually I would like to have the prospect of working in both of these forms of media. I have a particular interest in magazines and Foreign Affairs and I am inspired by the work of John Simpson, who has maintained his position of World Affairs Editor at BBC News for over twenty years.

For my A-levels I chose to study English Literature, Theatre Studies and French, because these courses have allowed me to develop both my written skills and structuring the writing style that is so varied for each subject. In English Literature we studied the era in which 'New Journalism' was introducing itself into society by such Journalists as Tom Wolfe and Gay Talese. Their 'unconventional' works were published in magazines rather than newspapers, due to the response from the editors who favoured the more 'traditional' journalists of the time. Theatre Studies has required me to devise and interpret plays which has enhanced my confidence, improvisation and time management skills, as well as building on theory and historical context. When studying French we take a view on current affairs from around the world today. We learn how to debate and compose various pieces of written work documenting both our own opinions and taking a neutral view. French A-level has also strengthened my skills to successfully learn a language with its grammar, vocabulary and culture.

I have recently been on a five day work placement with my local paper. It was a great experience where I gained the insight into the daily life of a journalist and I was able to write articles which required piecing together through photojournalism and interviews in order to produce the finished article. It also provided me with the practice to prepare me for both University and my future career. I have written articles for my school newspaper and hope to write more in the future. Throughout my life I have developed a particular interest in acting and the surrounding effects upon society that it creates. In 2008, I received a part as an extra in a period film directed by Julian Fellowes, recently previewed at The London Film Festival. I found it to be a good example of the amount of work put into successful media which is unknown by the public. It also showed me how intense the competition is within the film and media industries.

I am an Assistant Leader at Dorchester Youth Theatre and I have the privilege of working with teenagers only a few years younger than myself who share my passion for performance and have had responsibilities, such as co-directing various productions, whilst undertaking the role of Stage Manager.
These responsibilities are reflected in my work life as I have worked in a camping shop for 18 months; my time at the shop has allowed me to develop both my social and interpersonal skills alongside my organisation skills. These skills have been beneficial when taking part in expeditions as part of the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

I am taking a gap year commencing August 2010, in which I will go and work as an Au Pair for a family living in Italy; I will look after the child as required and teach him English. I am sure that this will help me to learn a new language and experience its culture, whilst experiencing independent life submerged in foreign culture.

I look forward to my University life and my future within Journalism and where it will take me. I believe that I am well suited to the demands of a Journalism degree because I have a genuine interest and the motivation to work hard and succeed.
